Nursing informatics is the synthesis of nursing science and three other sciences, Information science, Computer science and Cognitive science. These sciences form the building blocks of our specialty. As foundational structures, they facilitate our growth and as nursing science advances, our tools must pave the way by making our current path easier to navigate while setting the course for our future ventures.

The continued evolution of nursing informatics will foster interdisciplinary collaborations, repurpose old tools, and generate and use new tools to improve patient care while enhancing our profession. As we stretch our own skills and knowledge and those of our interdisciplinary partners, new ways of thinking and applying what we know will emerge while innovations and new applications evolve. One example of a new specialty that arose from interdisciplinary applications and innovative approaches is Cognitive Informatics (CI).

I am very excited that Dr. Kathleen Mastrian agreed to write an editorial on Cognitive Informatics (CI) and Nursing Practice. Please read her editorial in this edition of OJNI!
